bluechip industry bulletin

Armchairs left on the Caddebostan seafront, a lingerie brand written into the name of the women's football league, and a television network turning an eighties mall into the set of its series.

This week the selection leans towards the local agenda. A furniture brand left its armchairs on the Caddebostan seafront and in Bahariye Square, carrying the experience out of the store and into the street; a lingerie brand became title sponsor of women's football. Internationally, a television network turning an eighties shopping mall into the set of its own series shows how the cultural memory of a place can stand in for a build.

Finding the Real Thing Instead of Building the Set

For The Shards, Ryan Murphy's new series, FX went straight to the source rather than rebuilding 1980s Los Angeles from scratch, taking over the Sherman Oaks Galleria — which also appears in the show — for a weekend. A collectible credit card handed to visitors unlocked stops running from a record-listening station to a make-up kiosk, from heat-pressed t-shirts to a retro arcade. Instead of filling the space with brand signage, the build used mall rituals — shopping, music, cinema, gaming — as the entry point into the world of the series. Produced by experiential agency Creative Riff, the work shows how much storytelling weight a venue with its own cultural past can carry.

The Rockstar Energy Open ran for the third time on 14–16 August in Portland's waterfront park with forty partners, welcoming more than fifty thousand visitors and growing forty-nine per cent on last year. Producer Kemp Curley puts the growth down to placing world-class skateboarding and free waterfront concerts side by side without forcing it, and adds that the real challenge from here will be crowd management.
